PREPARE FOR PUNE

For those of you who wish to attend classes at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute in Pune, here are some tips to help you prepare for your visit:

Students who wish to travel to Pune must have practised the Iyengar Yoga system for at least 8 years prior to their visit.

All applications must be approved by the BKS Iyengar Yoga Institute of Southern Africa before applying to visit Pune. Only applications completed on the official pro forma will be considered by the Institute in Pune. Individual applications sent directly to the RIMYI will not be accepted.
Contact your Regional Chairperson who has a stock of the required forms or download one right here.

Please check the application requirements carefully to ensure you comply.

Owing to the large numbers of applications that the Institute receives, if the form is incomplete, your application will be discarded.

WHEN YOU CAN ATTEND:

Beginning March 2005, Smt. Dr. Geeta Iyenga has agreed to plan some regular time off for rest, study and vacation. Therefore, during the months below, Geetaji will not be conducting classes at RIMYI:

  • March
  • April
  • September
During these months, Geetaji's classes will be taught by the staff of teachers whom Geetaji herself has trained. They are all long-time students of the Iyengar family. Prashant's schedule will not change.

If you have a trip to RIMYI already scheduled for one of these months, you will be receiving a letter offering you the opportunity to reschedule your trip if you wish. Please wait for this letter to arrive before contacting Mr. Pandu Rao at RIMYI, E-mail info@rimyi.org.

APPLYING

Write to the Secretary of the Institute in Pune specifying which month/s you would like to attend General Classes enclosing a deposit of US$150. You may apply for one month or two consecutive months of General Classes.  The Institute is closed during the month of May.  There is a waiting list of two years for all General Classes.  The Indian winter months are the best times to be in India (December - March).  July is cool, although it is mid-summer but it is monsoon time and so very wet.

Once your letter arrives from Pune stating which months are available for General Classes, you should apply for a Bank Draft.  The cost for one month of classes, from December 2015, is US$500.00 (inclusive of the $150 deposit).  The details of the bank to which you send the draft will be in the letter from Pune.  Send the draft by registered mail!  After some time, you should receive confirmation of your booking and receipt of the bank draft.  This letter must accompany you on your arrival at the Institute in Pune as proof of your booking and payment.  The fees are not transferable or refundable.  Take a passport-size photo with you.

VISAS:
Please check with your consulate or travel agent for visa requirements.

INSTITUTE INFO

There are six classes and practice sessions a week.
The Institute is closed on Sundays.
Pranayama classes are given in the last week of every month.

All classes will be conducted by Geeta, Prashant or a staff member.

GETTING THERE:

SAA has direct flights to Mumbai three times a week.  Jet Airways fly Mumbai /Pune/Mumbai on most days.  This flight takes all of twenty minutes.

Hire a rickshaw or a taxi from Pune airport to your lodgings. Try to share the fare where possible.

Luxury buses or taxis, which are cheaper than air travel will take you directly to your hotel in Pune.

First Class train travel is by far the cheapest mode of travel and very comfortable (airline-type seating) taking just under 4 hours which is the same as the Luxury bus or taxi.

When taking a taxi from Mumbai Airport it is best to buy a prepaid ticket inside the building as officials sometimes send you back if you try to pay the driver directly.

Mumbai airport is a long distance from Mumbai and the train station has horrendous traffic jams during peak hours. Check with your hotel for the time you need to allow to get there.

There is a bus from Mumbai airport to Mumbai which terminates fairly near to the train station.

The International Airport is apart from the National airport.  These two airports are linked by a bus service - too far to walk!

MORE TIPS:

Money: Most banks open from 10h00 - 14h00, some in the evenings too.  Try to have a large supply of small denomination notes for tips/fares.  Traders won´t take torn notes so try to avoid accepting them.  There is a Thomas Cook on East Street just off Mahatma Ghandi Road - check opening times!

Drink: Only sealed bottles of mineral water.  Avoid ice.  Fresh lime soda = fresh lime juice and bottled soda water - available everywhere.  Lassi - a highly recommended yoghurt drink either sweet or salty.

Transport:  Rickshaws are the usual means of transport and most drivers speak English.  Check the meter when you get in and when you alight and add the amount listed on the driver´s chart.  Meters are out of date.  Drivers are not always honest.  Up to 3 people per rickshaw is permitted.  Transport Tariff Charts can be obtained from most travel agents or travel bureaux.  Current minimum charge Rp 7 (December 2004).

Businesses:  Many are closed during lunch time, some from noon to 4 pm but they are open later in the evening. Check beforehand as some are closed on Saturdays or Sundays.

Library at Institute:  You may use - open 16h00 - 18h00, in the basement.

Restaurant: Favourite vegetarian is the Amrapali on Fergusson College Road.  Around R50 for dinner - starter, main meal and lassi.  Try the German Bakery near the Blue Diamond Hotel and Osho Commune for delicious rolls, pastries and the best coffee in Pune.

Food: Remember salads are washed with tap water - so, beware!
