"The hardness of a diamond is part of its usefulness, but its true value is in the light that shines through it."

QUOTE FROM BKS IYENGAR

BECOME A TEACHER

To promote and maintain the high standard of teaching required by Mr BKS Iyengar and his family, all Iyengar teachers are trained for at least three years before being awarded an Iyengar teaching certificate. A prospective student teacher may only enter the teacher-training programme after an initial three years of study with an accredited teacher.

There are five levels of certification issued by Mr. Iyengar through the Institute in Pune:

  • Introductory
  • Intermediate Junior
  • Intermediate Senior
  • Junior Advanced
  • Senior Advanced

The certification process fosters the development of the qualities that create responsible and professional teachers and students who recognise the importance of on-going study. Further study among certificated teachers takes place at the Institute in India or with other certificated Iyengar yoga teachers from South Africa and abroad.

The process also emphasises the need for regular personal practice and the importance of teaching the methods of BKS Iyengar without mixing them with other styles of yoga.

In order to administer these courses, this Institute has set up an Assessment Committee which is responsible for all facets of the training and assessment of teachers at the Introductory and the Junior Intermediate levels in Southern Africa. Please contact your Regional Representative for details.
